Purpose of the Role

To provide enterprise-wide financial leadership and strategic direction, ensuring financial recovery, sustainability, and value creation through: Liquidity stabilisation and cash preservation, Cost base optimisation and expenditure control, Revenue integrity and commercial financial optimisation, Strengthening of internal controls, governance, and audit assurance, Financial restructuring and performance improvement. The role is accountable for positioning the organisation towards financial viability within a turnaround environment.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Financial Strategy, Turnaround and Performance Management

  • Lead the development and execution of a financial turnaround strategy aligned to the airline's corporate recovery plan.
  • Drive financial restructuring initiatives, including cost rationalisation, efficiency improvement, and financial sustainability interventions.
  • Provide strategic financial advisory to the CEO/GM and EXCO on business performance, investment decisions, and financial risk.
  • Establish and monitor financial performance metrics, including profitability, cost ratios, liquidity indicators, and operational efficiency benchmarks.

Financial Control, Accounting and Reporting

  • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting, including IFRS-compliant annual financial statements and monthly management accounts.
  • Maintain robust general ledger controls, reconciliations, and financial reporting systems.
  • Lead audit processes (internal and external) and ensure resolution of audit findings.
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory, regulatory, and SOE governance requirements.

Treasury, Liquidity and Capital Management

  • Drive cash flow management, liquidity planning, and working capital optimisation across the organisation.
  • Manage treasury operations, including banking relationships, funding structures, and financial instruments.
  • Oversee foreign exchange risk management, particularly in relation to fuel procurement, aircraft leases, and maintenance obligations.
  • Develop and implement strategies for debt management, refinancing, and capital optimisation.

Revenue, Commercial Finance and Profitability Management

  • Oversee revenue accounting for passenger and cargo operations, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Strengthen revenue assurance frameworks to eliminate leakage and improve yield performance.
  • Provide financial analysis to support route profitability, pricing strategies, and commercial decision-making.
  • Drive optimisation of ancillary revenue streams and commercial financial performance.

Cost Management, Procurement Oversight and Efficiency

  • Lead cost containment initiatives aligned to turnaround objectives, including operational and administrative expenditure.
  • Provide financial oversight and assurance on procurement processes to ensure compliance, value-for-money, and cost discipline.
  • Support contract evaluation and financial governance for key supplier arrangements, including fuel, maintenance, and leasing.
  • Drive benchmarking and cost efficiency programmes aligned to industry standards.

Payroll Governance and Workforce Cost Control

  • Ensure integrity, accuracy, and control of payroll processes in alignment with HR systems and organisational policies.
  • Oversee workforce cost modelling, including alignment with restructuring, manpower planning, and productivity targets.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations, including tax, pension, and benefits administration.

Risk Management, Governance and Compliance

  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive financial risk management framework.
  • Strengthen internal controls, including segregation of duties and system controls within ERP environments.
  • Lead fraud prevention and detection initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory frameworks, including aviation financial oversight requirements and SOE governance standards.

Administration and Corporate Services Oversight

  • Provide strategic oversight of administrative and corporate services functions, including facilities, insurance, and asset management.
  • Ensure efficient and cost-effective support services aligned to operational needs.
  • Maintain financial oversight of fleet-related assets and infrastructure from a capital and accounting perspective.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Educational Requirements

  • A recognised Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • A professional qualification such as CA, ACCA, or CIMA is mandatory.
  • A postgraduate qualification (MBA, MFin or equivalent) will be a distinct advantage

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 10-15 years' relevant post-qualification experience, of which at least five (5) years must have been at senior management or executive level.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial turnaround, restructuring, or cost optimisation within a complex, capital-intensive, or regulated environment.
  • Proven experience in treasury management, financial strategy, and financial governance.
  • Experience in aviation, transport, logistics, or similarly regulated industries will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex financial operations, including foreign exchange exposure, large payroll structures, and multi-functional finance environments.
